The ‘English Novel’ course (Timothy Spurgin) caused me to read ‘Waverly’ by Sir Walter Scott, the inventor of the historical novel. This is the first of about 50 books he wrote. One other one that is famous is ‘Ivanhoe.’ They all take place in the Scottish highlands in the 1700s. This book was published in 1814. It is quite readable. It kind of gives new meaning to the Bob Dylan song ‘My heart’s in the highlands’ though I don’t know exactly what he is referring to in that song.
