Reinhold Niebuhr

In theological terms, his achievement (Reinhold Niebuhr) was to perpetuate the old liberalism, adapting it to the civic religion of the 1950s, when anticommunism became a kind of national faith. (This civic faith led to the addition of ‘under God’ to the pledge of allegiance in 1954, and to the creation of a new national motto, ‘In God we trust,’ in 1956.) Niebuhr’s very limited critique of liberal Protestantism served as inoculation against real rethinking. – ‘Reinventing Liberal Theology’ Theo Hobson
