Instead, the religious Right was allowed to dominate the discussion — in the intellectual as well as the popular realm. It was allowed to drum home the message that Christian values were being dismantled by secular liberalism. Billy Graham was the drummer-in-chief: it was he who transformed a neoevangelical movement into a huge political force. This movement was galvanized by resentment at the civil rights movement and the federal government’s backing of it; but naturally the movement could not directly voice such resentment. Defense of prayer in public schools became the ostensible rallying point, and then abortion.
