An inward turn misses the point, insofar as it directs our attention away from this one man, without whom there is no living by the Spirit of God in the presence of God the Father. The doctrine of the Trinity supports an outward turn to faith in God in the flesh, as given to us in the external word of the Gospel.

But conversely, the point of the doctrine of the Trinity becomes clearer when we see, with Luther, that what the Gospel has always done is give us God in person.

To think of God like Luther is therefore to separate our metaphysics from our spirituality, in a way that departs from a major strand in Western theology whose greatest early representative is Augustine.
