I am reading Bart Ehrman book, How Jesus Became God, pretty similar material to various Marcus Borg books I have read, like ‘Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary.’ They both became disillusioned with the typical evangelical paradigm. Bart D. Ehrman left the faith, Borg remained. I was struck by Ehrman saying ‘fundamentalists are children of the Enlightenment,’ in that they want so-called ‘objective truth.’ When they realize it’s not what they were led to believe, they are left with nothing.
This review of a book by Bart Ehrman in the Christian Century I think describes him perfectly, from other books of his I’ve read – ‘However, Ehrman’s book is intended for readers generally unacquainted with this scholarly work. Among those readers he obviously aims to have a dramatic impact. … ‘ In other words, he writes about fairly well-known scholarly conclusions and presents them as amazing news.
